Come celebrate the life and work of Re/SEARCH and Search & Destroy founder V. Vale, hosted by artists Beatie Wolfe and Aaron Rose.
It’s rare to meet an artist who still embodies everything they stood for when they first began their mission. But that’s V. Vale: a writer, publisher, researcher, documenter, musician, and constant curator and contributor to the counterculture continuum. Described as the first (and last!) 70s punk publisher, Vale is an ever-evolving verb in perpetual motion.
After launching San Francisco’s first punk zine Search & Destroy in 1977 with $100 each from Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Vale founded RE/Search in 1980 for his other cultural-anthropological explorations including Industrial music, the writings of J.G. Ballard and William S. Burroughs, feminism, “Incredibly Strange” filmmaking and so much more. A cornerstone of the counterculture movement, Vale's influence remains both all-pervasive and yet hidden in plain sight.
This event includes a conversation between V. Vale, Aaron Rose and Beatie Wolfe; a live DJ set from Money Mark on tape cassettes; a reading of Vale's cat haikus and "Goals for Life" and a live performance from V. Vale and Marian Wallace. This event will be recorded for dublab radio.

Aaron Rose is an artist, film director, curator and writer. In the early 90’s, he founded the Alleged Gallery in New York, which helped launch the careers of many of today's top contemporary artists. He directed the feature documentary Beautiful Losers, based on his experiences during that time. He has also made numerous films and commercials for television. As a visual artist, Rose has exhibited internationally and his work is held in both private and public collections. His writings have been published in i-D, Dazed and Confused, ArtForum, Purple, Self Service, Flash Art, Kaleidoscope and numerous exhibition catalogs. Rose is also the founder of Make Something!!, a non-profit art education program for teens which partners renowned creative personalities with young aspiring artists.

”Musical weirdo and visionary" (Vice) Beatie Wolfe has beamed her music into space, been appointed a UN role model for innovation, and held an acclaimed solo exhibition of her ‘world first’ album designs at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Wolfe's latest projects include a visualization of 800,000 years’ worth of climate data, a collective postcard art demonstration with Mark Mothersbaugh and the world's first bioplastic record with Michael Stipe and Brian Eno.

In 1977 Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti funded V. Vale's Search & Destroy (which morphed into RE/Search in 1980). Goal: document and catalyze underground and taboo-breaking artists and ideas. Vale continues dispersing countercultural ideas through publications, media, and personal appearances. New publications: "San Francisco" (photo book) and "Secrets of Street Photography" (zine) by Yoshi Yubai; Terminal "Punk" philosophy; new deluxe hardback editions of RE/Search #8/9: J.G. Ballard; R/S #4/5: Burroughs, Gysin, Throbbing Gristle; R/S #6/7: Industrial Culture Handbook.
